The Heidelberg Catechism Part II: Deliverance The Resurection of Christians, Part 1 Lord’s Day 22
Question 57: How does “the resurrection of the body” comfort you?
Answer 57: Not only will my soul be taken immediately after this life to Christ its head, [1] but also my very flesh will be raised by the power of Christ, reunited with my soul, and made like Christ’s glorious body. [2]
Supporting Scripture:
[1] Luke 23:43 NKJV And Jesus said to him, "Assuredly, I say to you, today you will be with Me in Paradise."
Philippians 1:21-23 NKJV For to me, to live is Christ, and to die is gain. (22) But if I live on in the flesh, this will mean fruit from my labor; yet what I shall choose I cannot tell. (23) For I am hard-pressed between the two, having a desire to depart and be with Christ, which is far better.
[2] 1 Corinthians 15:20 NKJV But now Christ is risen from the dead, and has become the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep.
1 Corinthians 15:42-45 NKJV So also is the resurrection of the dead. The body is sown in corruption, it is raised in incorruption. (43) It is sown in dishonor, it is raised in glory. It is sown in weakness, it is raised in power. (44) It is sown a natural body, it is raised a spiritual body. There is a natural body, and there is a spiritual body. (45) And so it is written, "The first man Adam became a living being." The last Adam became a life-giving spirit.
1 Corinthians 15:54 NKJV So when this corruptible has put on incorruption, and this mortal has put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written: "Death is swallowed up in victory."
Philippians 3:21 NKJV who will transform our lowly body that it may be conformed to His glorious body, according to the working by which He is able even to subdue all things to Himself.
1 John 3:2 NKJV Beloved, now we are children of God; and it has not yet been revealed what we shall be, but we know that when He is revealed, we shall be like Him, for we shall see Him as He is.
Q 58: How does the article concerning “life everlasting” comfort you?
A 58: Even as I already now experience in my heart the beginning of eternal joy, [1] so after this life I will have perfect blessedness such as no eye has seen, no ear has heard, no human heart has ever imagined: a blessedness in which to praise God forever. [2]
Supporting Scripture:
[1] Romans 14:17 NKJV for the kingdom of God is not eating and drinking, but righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit.
[2] John 17:3 NKJV And this is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent.
1 Corinthians 2:9 NKJV But as it is written: "Eye has not seen, nor ear heard, nor have entered into the heart of man the things which God has prepared for those who love Him."
